Audacity as a very well known and a popular audio editor on Linux. It does not come mostly pre-installed in many Linux distro’s such as Ubuntu etc due to some unknown reasons. However, with some ppa commands we can roll over the latest release and upgrade automatically as and when the new versions are pushed upstream. This tutorial shows a simple way to install the latest Audacity release on Ubuntu, Debian, Linux mint etc.
Note:- Audacity does not come with pre-compiled Linux binary. Here we shall implement instead of building from source such as tar balls etc. a third party ppa shall come handy.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/audacity
Now we can use the GUI based software-updater to update the packages etc, but let’s stick to CLI way and input the below command’s one by one:-
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install audacity
That’s it voila ! Now you shall have the latest and the greatest version installed all the time when you run your Linux machine, provided that you upgrade your system/machine on a regular basis.
Now just in case you feel like it’s not your cup of tea or something, you may uninstall the CLI way as usual
sudo apt-get remove --autoremove audacity audacity-data
